Transgender Ideology Bullies Bookseller
by Collin Wynter
Abigail Shrier, author of the controversial book Irreversible Damage(2020), is back for another round of attempted cancel culture. Known for her investigative journalism into female adolescent gender transitions, this time she’s up against the American Booksellers Association.
In response to a complaint about Shrier’s book being included in a monthly product mail out, the ABA tweeted out an apology stating:
An anti-trans book was included in our July mailing to members. This is a serious, violent incident that goes against ABA’s ends policies, values, and everything we believe and support. It is inexcusable.
It is unclear who complained or how many complaints there were. However, “[a]pologies are not enough” the ABA stated. They also feel it is necessary to address the matter through “critical dialogue” and will be sharing the steps it will be taking in the next three weeks. Previously, Shrier has been attacked by trans rights activists for claims she was causing them harm. The most recent of these charges was from persons in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Two petitions were circulated in an attempt to have her book revoked from the Halifax public library. The attempt at censorship was supported by the Halifax Pride association.

It was not successful.
Shrier’s book is now released in paperback, with a new forward, on Amazon. However, as reported by NBC on July 14, 2021, employees quit over the publication:
At least two Amazon employees have resigned in recent weeks to protest the company’s decision to continue to sell a book they say frames young people who identify as transgender as mentally ill.
Shrier has used the term “peer contagion” to describe the influence of transgender ideology sweeping through society and directing adolescent girls to transition. In a 2020 New York Post piece, she noted the drastic increase in adolescent females transitioning:
Between 2016 and 2017, the number of gender surgeries for natal females in the US quadrupled; in the UK, the rates of gender dysphoria for teenage girls are up 4,400 percent over the previous decade. An ailment that typically began in early childhood, and overwhelmingly afflicted males, suddenly has a new dominant demographic: teenage girls.
Persons who feel that their gender identity does not match their biological sex are considered to be experiencing gender dysphoria. For youth, a “watchful waiting” approach showed 63% of children had their symptoms of gender dysphoria dissipate by puberty. However, in recent years, an affirmation-only model has been introduced. This model requires clinicians to affirm a child’s self identified gender. Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, highlights this method on their Transgender Youth Clinic page.
In Canada, a bill to ban conversion therapy would have the unintended effect of denying a “watchful waiting” approach to patients experiencing gender dysphoria. By denying patients access to this form of clinical therapy, they may be transitioning individuals that will not benefit from it. And in fact, may be harming.
There has been an increase in de-transitioners- people who have gone through some form of medical transition to appear as the opposite sex and are now medically transitioning back to their birth sex. Many are afraid to speak up publicly for the abuse they will receive from trans rights activists. Some do not feel like they can return to the clinics that out them on the path to transition. Kiera Bell in the United Kingdom is one such individual speaking out about her experience transitioning through the use of gender clinics.
Shrier deserves respect for her integrity and courage to stand up and speak out in face of the mob. Only though open and honest discussion can the medical profession and society move towards the truth. Why are so many young females transiting? What are the best methods to assist with gender dysphoria? Why are so many elite professionals convinced that affirmation therapy is the only method?
Only time will tell why these questions are being ignored by mainstream society. But by then, how many children’s lives will be effected by irreversible damage?
